Anatomy, Shadings, Expressions and Poses

Any one interested in sketching the human form must have a good understanding in these areas. Some artists are naturally gifted and they find it easy to master. Unfortunately, for me it is quite the opposite. Any good artist can easily point out the defects in my sketches. Proper dimensions of the body, muscles, postures, etc. are some things I have to learn. The rendering of hands and feet is also a dead giveaway of my difficulties.
A good artist once told me that you should draw what you see in real life. Learning to see how light falls on an object to cast shadows and produce the difference shades of colors that give it depth. Look at a mirror and study your face to simulate the different expressions. He said that the best teacher was observation.
