Concept Art for new MMO

I have had a a tremendous amount of new opportunities recently. I am concurrently working on four separate game projects, mostly as a concept artist.
Concept Art, Farland, MMORPG

I have included a couple of the architectural items I have created for one of the games. Farland is a new MMORPG being created by a dedicated team of independent developers. The game is old school fantasy, trying to hearken back to the origins of the genre.

I tried to create a version of medieval architecture that is true to the fantasy genre, realistic and believable, functional and esthetically similar enough to be recognized as the same civilization. Both of these example images are of strategic and utilitarian buildings. The gate has a greater need to be intimidating and showing a sense of the power of the city, as well as being defensive.

I am enjoying this role. In each of the games a different style, unique and challenging.

Ippy - Slings and Arrows

Ippy Slings and Arrows
Ippy here is the mascot for a new web service that will go live later next month. This image was created specifically for any error page that might occur.

Ippy has now been drawn in a wide variety of poses and I rather like this character.

Monster HEADS!

New, quick, sketches. Both of them are just heads… I’m thinking it might be time to do a collage of sorts, with a bunch of creature heads on pikes.

I’ve been so incredibly busy between Savvy-U, Innovocus and Janos that I have not been sketching… SUCK!

So, while on the biweekly Janos conference call, I sketched in my note pages. The conversation was great, there are many wonderful things happening with Janos, but I needed to sketch!

This first guy here needs a sword, a bandanna and a salty growl to his voice and he’d go a plunderin with the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Or maybe he is a minion of Cthulhu… It is so hard to distinguish from the various tentacled monsters, demons and demi-gods. After awhile they all just start to look like each other.

The second dude here is a demon with either stubby or broken horns. he also seems to have a rather painful kink in his neck. Must be hell!

I am hopeful that I will be able to sit down and do a few pages of sketches tonight. I have a few ideas in my head I’d like to get down, and it is the begining of the weekend after all.

And While I’m dreaming, maybe this cold will also go away…

Comic Femme Fatal

She is an unnamed heroine of my own creation.
Femme Fatal Comic

Loosely based on Macavite’s character Merideth, I drew her in a series of sketches while Shane Nitzsche was staying with us. Shane did me the honor of inking her.

Creeptastic Sketches

Crepio

I feel this was a particularly productive sketching session. Using Alias Sketchbook allows me to go further than I might if I was sketching on paper with a pencil and markers. SO I really enjoy using it

Filling the Void

Filling the Void

Start at any point on the page, and draw. Draw anything, but try to make it interesting. Now look at the negative space, and fill that space with another drawing. Keep doing this until you have a full page of sketches.

What's He See?

What's He See

I was just drawing and trying to come up with a very basic story. From that I’d add more to the drawing. So the first character I drew, in this instance, was the freaked out character on the left. I see him as kinda frozen with fear. Everybody else is trying to figure out why he is in such a state of fear.

New Sketches

monsters, creature, sketchbook

I finally had enough time to start sketching again. Yes I have actually been that busy, working every night until I pass out, and then waking and doing it all over again is exhausting. So I really enjoyed taking the time to sit down and just create random creatures.

Goblin Painting and Kobold Quartlery

Goblin Painting

Alright, it is a beginning. My first attempts at painting in Painter 11 disappeared with the computer issues. The problem was timed perfectly.I was pretty much fed up with Painter, and the short break gave me the opportunity to approach it anew.

Back to the Drawing Board

I broke out the sketchbook again last night for the first time in several weeks. I have instead been spinning my wheels in Painter 11 and Alias Sketchbook. It was nice to get back to the analog world for a night, if for no other reason than to get something into the world.

What is a professional?

How does an amateur become a professional? Is it a state or title? Is it attained through the completion of formal studies or is it gained through experience? Is it the mastery of the medium or the mainstream acceptance of your art? Is it based on the quality of work done or just simply being paid to do it?

What do you think

Caricatures

In my humble opinion, caricatures may be the simplest form of illustrations to do. In studying what you want to draw, you must keep in mind the features that define, identify or makes the subject stand out. Study the whole face and take note of unique features such as the ears, eyes, nose or even the hair. Then simply exaggerate these attributes. Choosing an identifiable face to draw makes the job fairly easy. However, regular or common faces are harder to duplicate. Drawing style is not as critical because often the purpose of the drawing is to satirize a person/s, events or situation.
