What is a professional?

December 8th 2006 23:21
How does an amateur become a professional? Is it a state or title? Is it attained through the completion of formal studies or is it gained through experience? Is it the mastery of the medium or the mainstream acceptance of your art? Is it based on the quality of work done or just simply being paid to do it?

What do you think?

Caricatures

November 11th 2006 11:22
In my humble opinion, caricatures may be the simplest form of illustrations to do. In studying what you want to draw, you must keep in mind the features that define, identify or makes the subject stand out. Study the whole face and take note of unique features such as the ears, eyes, nose or even the hair. Then simply exaggerate these attributes. Choosing an identifiable face to draw makes the job fairly easy. However, regular or common faces are harder to duplicate. Drawing style is not as critical because often the purpose of the drawing is to satirize a person/s, events or situation.

Robots,Cyborgs and Spaceships

October 20th 2006 16:56
I find mechanical things intriguing. I have destroyed countless toys trying to figure out how each worked. This got me into a lot of trouble because they belonged to my other siblings. This interest in mechanical stuff is reflected in my sketches of robots and cyborgs. Robot subjects are comparatively easy to draw than either the male or female form. They do not have to display emotion and need not be anatomically correct.

I think that the fascination with robots is universal. Maybe one is amazed how something inanimate can imitate life and simulate consciousness. Or is it a longing to be something more? Show me someone who hasn’t dreamed of being stronger, faster or even live longer? To have the ability to fly, control the elements and be beyond restriction.

I also like to design and draw vehicles and aircraft. However, I am not easily satisfied in just drawing them. There is a need in me to build them as well. This need for tactile connection is what drives me to build cardboard models or sculpt. In a way, I can not help it.

Superheroes and Fantasy

October 18th 2006 10:12
Many artists will tell you that what inspired them to draw were cartoons, movies or TV programs they watched when they were growing up. I remember watching old cartoons like Gigantor(Anime?) and Superman (the one with Krypto).

More Drawings

Any one interested in sketching the human form must have a good understanding in these areas. Some artists are naturally gifted and they find it easy to master. Unfortunately, for me it is quite the opposite. Any good artist can easily point out the defects in my sketches. Proper dimensions of the body, muscles, postures, etc. are some things I have to learn. The rendering of hands and feet is also a dead giveaway of my difficulties.

Trial and Errors

I had a few days free so I decided to do some practice drawings. Considering my weaknesses, I really do need to practice. Here are some practices I made that week.

Personal Waterloo: The Female Form

October 14th 2006 14:21
Even before, I had difficulty drawing the female form. They always ended up looking masculine. Drawing females is one of my frustrations. You can see some of my initial female drawings below.

First Sketches

October 14th 2006 12:25
These are my first sketches. First, in the sense that it has been several years since I last picked up a pencil or pen. It is in fact, a resumption of where I left off when I was young. It comes as no surprise that my initial sketches leave much to be desired.

Stiff Fingers

September 30th 2006 12:43
Another skill I picked up when I was very young.I recall telling stories to my classmates using a small flashlight as illumination, as if we were in a movie theater, with my drawings of Superman. When the Super Anime robots like Voltes V, Daimos and Mazinger Z became very popular (I was in Grade school), I came out with my own generic versions such as Mostan D (sounds like a pain medication now) and Victory Robot. Needless to say, I also made up my own episodic stories. Drawings were patterned from their original Anime counterparts.

However, this skill suffered the same fate as my fascination with cardboard modeling. Although I doodled during classes in high school until college, I never attempted to improve how I draw nor to try and develop a style. I just found it a convenient skill when I needed to do some illustrations for school. When I graduated, I hardly ever drew again
