Speed Painting

A question I am often asked is; "How do you start a new painting?"

This is a tough question to answer as it includes a great many questions in response. Am I working digitally? Is there an existing style or subject matter?

Depending on the style, the subject and the end format, this can vary widely. But if it is just a fun painting for me with no preconceived concept I will often start with these really quick and really rough speed paintings.

speed painting, sketch

As you can see it is little more than blobs, streaks ans shapes of varying shades of gray. The idea is to allow your mind to wander and to see things in the shapes and blobs. A self induced vorshack test, without the judgment on your psyche.

This one I never moved forward with, but I still look at it and have many ideas. And that is all I need from such an exercise. It allows me to see new perspectives and often create a scene I would otherwise never have envisioned.

I have often tried to incorporate this same process into a painting where I have already been given a subject... Try looking at clouds with the thought of finding queen Elizabeth. Either every cloud has that form, or none. It is the same with this process. If you already have an idea, you will see it in every ink blob, or not at all.

So looking at this image, what do you see? Does it spark any new ideas?

Train Tickets

This is one of the "props" from my halloween costume this year. Yes I still dress for halloween, in my defense. I have a large group of friends who throw a week long halloween party at a big lodge we rent out for the event.

Each year they put out a theme, and your costume must fit into said theme. Mine invariably require an assortment of props, as does any proper costume.

I handed out a range of train tickets to most of the people attending.

New stuff is on the Way

I have actually been sketching prodigiously, and doing some new stuff in 3d that I am excited to show everyone. Currently working on a painting for an online competition and also breaking out my oil paints for a series of traditional work. If it was not for the lack of income, I would be very much enjoying this year.

I have been sorely lacking in the time I have spent both here and on my personal art blog I hope to remedy that in the future by making it part of my day... I expect everyone to hold my feet to the fire when I am remiss.

I was thinking how fun it would be for people to ask for tips, advice etc in regards to their own drawing or art, and then writing out the response here. I do something very similar with another blog that I own, it is a constant stream of interesting topics and adds value to the overall community... Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions in regards to this, I would love to hear them.

Other than that I will be back to adding the results of my nightly sketch session here, starting July 19th.

Comic Strips

Paintball Comic Strip

So I have been posting a series of comic strips I created back in 1999 or earlier that I recently stumbled across in an old archive CD-ROM. At the time I had a Strip Called Cold Coffee, which I have not been able to track down, but these paintball comic strips were a side project that only ever existed in the paintball magazines of the day. I thought they had been lost.

News Etc

My portfolio and sketchbook blog has been added to the Guide to Art School’s list of the 50 Best Cartooning and Animation blogs. I thought that was pretty Neat-O.

I have shifted over my nightly sketch sessions to doing environments rather than creatures, for the time being. I was getting too comfortable in the creature sketches and thought it was time to shake it up... Should be posting some of those sketches in the near future

So Sorry! I Suck!

There is quite a bit going on in Casa De Hammer. Rather than go into a rather boring diatribe of whoa and heartache, which benefits no-one, let me instead spread the joy of positive happenings.

Savvy-U.com has made some very large strides forward, and I will likely be working it full time in the near future. We are currently in negotiations with 2 multi-billion dollar companies and a 3rd company that does DOE contract work. Savvy U will provide the training for new staff and professional certification continued education credits. These are all big deals, and can really get the company rolling. If any of them happen I will be 40 hours a week from home on this company, and we will be looking for Multimedia people, animators etc

Multicampers Comic Strip

So far it is a work in progress as Soup and I work through the characters, story lines and look of the comic. But there are currently a few strips up at The Funniez.

So out of the gate Multicampers is the adventures of a group of airsoft fanatics in their battle to cope with reality and conquer an imaginary world of camouflage and military simulation. However today we decided that it will pour out into a much broader range of topics including Geocacheing, mountaineering, and general outdoorsy topics

Blob, Creature Painting

Blob Creature
Another creature painting, this time an angry blobulous monster. I have been quite busy recently with freelance work, but am always looking for more. This particular image is one of several I am creating. It is perhaps less dynamic than it should be, and the camera angle is my typical 6 foot perspective. Regardless I had tons of fun creating this image, and now look forward to the next one, which will be far more dynamic. I already have many ideas to make this image better, and someday hopefully I will have the free time and desire to go back at it. For now it is as it will be.

Goblin Joust Update

All of a sudden I find myself swamped with freelance work. it seems to come in waves like most things. So, rather than go into those boring details... Though they are actually quite exciting, I thought I'd show the updates made to this painting.

GWAHHH! New Painting

Whats He See Painting

This painting is still in progress, but it has been about a week since I last posted, so I thought you all might like to see what I am working on. You might recognize it from a recent sketch “whats He See?”. I very much like where this one is going, even with the odd square format.

Contests!

Every month Gnomon Workshop puts on a contest where they give away several thousand dollars worth of their training DVD’s. My Catacombs painting won said contest in February of 2008, since then I have not entered. Not that I would enjoy entering again, I just rarely have the time to finish a painting to that level of polish in any given month. Well this month I am going to try and get an entry submitted. The topic this month is Gothic Beauty and I have just over a week, in which I am REALLY busy with work projects. As if that isn’t enough I am also going to enter the CG Challenge at CGSociety.org Challenge 24 “Secret Agent”. This challenge I have a VERY low chance of winning, but the prizes are very impressive, the competition is top notch, their is a reasonable amount of time and I have a great idea for my image.

For me the competitions are fun, because I am a competitive person and like to see how I stack up against the best people in the world. In addition the exposure never hurts, heck the judges even looking at my image is great, and who knows maybe I’ll create an image that just blows everyone away

Short Story - Fall of Helinor

Writing stories of a fanciful nature is something to which I desire, however I am far from a proficient author. This short story is the first of a world I have imagined in my mind from the time I was a small child. It is a mix of fantasy and Sci-Fi. Much like the worlds of Star Wars there is much of the future and much of the ancient past. It is a world in which science and magic are one and the same, maybe science has advanced that far, or maybe science is based on the magic. This short is just flowing from the top of my head, no planning, just typing words as they come. It is an experiment of sorts for me.

Ze Joust Sketch

Joust, sketch, concept, drawing

It is hard to look noble with such a steed. This sketch is heavily influenced by Brian Froud and his designs for the movie "Labyrinth".

Angel of Fury

Angel of Fury

This painting was begun as a speedpaint while I was attending the Massive Black/Concept Art event in Seattle 2008. It has been worked over so many times it little resembles the original. I have this idea for an angel of fury that is literally an animate explosion. Why would a “living” explosion need a sword? Maybe the sword is the talisman of his power, who knows.
