What is a professional?

How does an amateur become a professional? Is it a state or title? Is it attained through the completion of formal studies or is it gained through experience? Is it the mastery of the medium or the mainstream acceptance of your art? Is it based on the quality of work done or just simply being paid to do it?

What do you think?

I believe being paid for the work makes the distinction. I think that is the well established criterion.

But don't worry, continue to do what you want to, look at ways to improve and seek an audience and be quick to leap at any money making opportunities.

Thanks katyzzz!

I have been lucky enough to be a "paid" talent of an e-learning company. Although I did some freelance projects before, I am quite grateful that the company is willing to gamble with me even at my current skill level.

Having been paid to write an article and recieving a hundred bucks from a magazine makes you a profesional writer. Maybe not good but profesional
If a woman takes money for her service of men she is a whore, but one who doesn't can be labeled one for her attitude.
If you write badly you could be a profesional writing whore.
If you are realy good at what you do it doesn't matter does it?

That's a nice analogy TomN!

Dont you think that money somehow compromises the work?Maybe opting for quantity instead of quality.

But I guess if you enjoy what you do, and money is not the issue, then it really doesn't matter.

It gets to be like the professional sport debate. I don't think money is evil in any way at all except when it is used for power. Never knock it back but learn to live with very little of it if you can.
