Ravens - Pen & Ink

Crows Pen & Ink Sketch
Crows in Pen, Ink, white acrylic and with Photoshop retouch
Yesterday I posted a sketch page without reference, so today thought I'd show a "sketch" done with live reference out in my yard. This image is several years old. The initial drawings were done in pen & ink and then highlights were put back in with white acrylic paint. I then scanned them in and did a little work in photoshop mostly just pulling out more highlights, adding the red accents and cleaning up the scan artifacts.

It is actually a composite of two separate sketches, both on the same page but not originally together as they are here. The crow on the left was sitting vigil in our cherry tree. It sat like that for minutes, I determined that he/she must have been on lookout. The crow on the right is actually drawn from about 20 different crows that did this or a very similar pose, regularly. They would take on this pose to chase another bird away from the fruit, or their territory in the tree.

The sketches, that became these pen & ink drawings were done in about 1/2 hour. Then I went inside, sat down with my pens and refined the sketches. once the ink was dry I used white acrylic paint and started adding back in the highlights. Finally I scanned in the page, cleaned them up a bit in Photoshop and added the red, and adjusted the levels to get this image.

Crows make me laugh, they can be terrifyingly intelligent one moment, then utter buffoons the next. We have 2 ancient cherry trees in our yard that the crows raucously plunder. I swear if one finds the tree the entire world population of crows knows about it in 20 minutes. I’d be pissed if I could get to the cherries myself. But, alas, the trees are far too tall to reach with ladders, so instead I sit back and watch the crows squabble over every last fruit. They strip the trees bare of cherries in a matter of hours. It is fantastic.

This drawing came from one of those memorable springs days, sitting out on the back deck watching the birds frolic in their new found bounty. I am actively anticipating the return of our local murder of crows. Their flights through our woods is no less entertaining.

We're of one mind, Mindzle.

The funniest thing I find about drawing from life is when you see something that doesn't make sense, visually.

Foreshortening, for instance.

Sometimes the brain is just telling me, "No, that can't be." That's when the hand, in conjunction with the eye, has to step in. It's usually when mine steps out for lunch.
