The cast of "The Simpsons"
After all these years, I still enjoy watching “The Simpsons.” In fact, I tune in every chance I get.
After watching an episode, I often wondered who did the voices of the individual cartoon characters. I do know that Julie Kavner does the voice of Marge Simpson. Who could ever forget her unique voice in the movie “Awakenings” with Robin Williams? It was quite a welcome treat when I saw an episode of John Lipton's “Inside the Actors Studio” featuring the cast. It gave me an insight of how little I know about them.
Dan Castellaneta is the genius behind the voices of Homer Simpson, his father Abe Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Groundskeeper Willie, Mayor Joe Quimby, Sideshow Mel, Hans Moleman, etc. I would have never guessed that he did the voices of these many characters.
Jule Kavner does not only do the voice of Marge Simpson but her mother Jackie Bouvier, and siblings Patty and Selma.
Most fans know that Nancy Cartwright does the voice of Bart Simpson. She has become so famous in doing voices of little boys in different animated series that she has even written a book about it, “My life as a 10-year old Boy.” She has coined the popular phrases of Bart “Eat my Shorts”, “Ay, Caramba” and “Don’t have a cow, Man.”
It is quite befitting that Yeardley Smith does the voice of Lisa Simpson. She exudes the same sense of class, honesty, frankness and intelligence as her animated counterpart.
Another voice maestro is Hank Azaria who does Police Chief Wiggum, the Comic Book Guy, Professor Frink, Dr. Nick Riviera, Sea Captain Kirk Van Houten, barkeep Moe Szylak, Quicky Mart owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, just to name a few. (We share the same birthday!)
Last and certainly not the least is Harry Sherer as the voices of billionaire C. Montgomery Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Principal Seymour Skinner, Reverend Lovejoy, the alien Kang, Otto, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibert, Lenny, etc.
These exceptional group of voice performers together with the show's talented writers and creators broke new ground and made this animated series (and its’ characters) beloved worldwide.
